Stop no. 1(d)
Abbey Court Hotel, Dublin Road
The MacGowan family have long regarded the Abbey Court as their family hotel. It has hosted countless gatherings and celebrations over the years, and Shane himself stayed here frequently. Today, the bar snug features a small collection of memorabilia, including a photograph of Shane with his mother displayed beside the band alcove..
A visit to the snug is highly recommended. There, you’ll also find a hand-painted tribute to Shane, inviting guests to “sit for a while,” (keep an eye out for an old hurling ball).
The hotel also served as a location for several interviews with Shane’s family and friends during the research for Richard Balls’ biography "A Furious Devotion: The Life of Shane MacGowan", adding to its cultural and historical significance.
If you’re visiting Nenagh and would like a copy of the book, we recommend calling into the wonderful Nenagh Bookshop on Pearse Street, where Catherine and John are always happy to help.
