Dromineer

This main harbour and beautiful lakeside village on the Shannon, was visited by Shane and his family throughout his life. Shane’s mother danced here as a young woman at regattas, and his beloved Uncle John would travel here on Sunday nights on a pony and trap to visit what is now The Whiskey Still, then owned by John’s friend and known as Hochsheys.

One of the most popular visitor atrcations on Lough Derg it is a hive of activity during summer months with a wide range of water activities, particularly sailing taking place in the bay.

It is one of the Shannon locations which inspired the final lines of Shane’s ode to these Tipperary heartlands:

"So I walked as day was dawning
Where small birds sang and leaves were falling
Where we once watched the row boats landing
By the Broad Majestic Shannon".
