Stop no. 1 (b) Shane MacGowan Murals Emmett Place, Nenagh.

Commissioned by Tipperary County Council and created by mural artist Neil O’Dwyer, Emmet Place in Nenagh now features two striking murals honouring the legacy of Shane MacGowan.

The first mural, completed in late 2024, presents Shane as a seasoned performer. Speaking about his approach, O’Dwyer explained:

“When designing the mural, I wanted to portray a mature Shane as the performer, in a way that has each observer guessing what he might be thinking.”

The piece is rich in symbolism. The Celtic shield motif represents protection and love, while the red rose references both the Red Roses for Me album and Shane’s known fondness for roses. Woven through the scarf are subtle nods to his music, his family, and his cultural heritage.

The second mural, completed in mid-2025, features a backdrop of Luska on the “Broad Majestic Shannon” (stop no. 10 on this tour), a place Shane cherished and visited often in his youth. Inspired by the closing lines of the song The Broad Majestic Shannon, the mural offers a gentle yet powerful tribute to the songwriter and poet, whose roots in Tipperary continue to resonate deeply.

Since their completion, both murals have drawn international attention and have quickly become essential stops for fans paying tribute to Shane MacGowan.
