Stop No. 9
Skehanagh/Cleary's Quay on Lough Derg.
Skehanagh, or more specifically the beautiful natural area known locally as Cleary’s Quay, is one of the three key stops on the Broad Majestic Shannon part of the tour. This tranquil spot was a place the very young Shane visited on occasions during his childhood stays in the area.
Believed to date as far back as the 8th century, the stone quay served as a landing point for boats travelling to and from Illaunmore, located just 2 kilometres across the lake. Illaunmore is one of the last inhabited islands on the River Shannon and today has a population of just one resident.
The bench at the quay was funded by the local community, many of
whom spent unforgettable summer days swimming here during the
1960s and 70s. Visitors are invited to pause, sit, and take in the beauty and stillness of one of the most peaceful places on the lake. If you’re lucky, you might even catch sight of a traditional “row boat landed.”
The second seat, closer to the road is in memory of the Cleary family from whom this quay gets its name.
